London Fashion Week 2017 came to an end earlier last week and if you’re like me your feeds have been full of fashionistas at the top shows and socialising late into the night around London. Though the world of high fashion has always been accompanied by amazingly talented photographers, now we all take selfies ourselves and models are no different. Just take Kylie Jenner for example, the reality TV star is also an Instagram star with 86.9 million followers. Here is our Pair Mobile guide to creating your best pics to rival those of Kylie Jenner.
1. Be Prepared
The first rule of taking great shots for Instagram is to arm yourself with the right tools. When we look at Kylie Jenner it is clear that she has invested time and energy (and a lot of money) in her image. Her snaps are not great just because she has some innate talent for it. She might have some talent, but mainly she has the right tools and has learned how to use them. To give yourself a fighting chance at taking decent shots you need to do likewise. Here are some of the items you should never be without.
- Selfie Stick
- Mini LED Selfie Light or Light Up Phone Cover
- GripSnap- a magnetic arm that can be wall mounted and manoeuvred to any angle you like
- Photo Editing Apps
- Make-up Bag
- 2. Think Composition
We’re not gonna dive into a full-length photography lesson here, but composition is one of the principles of good photography and you should at least consider it when you’re taking insta snaps. Composition is basically the structure of the image captured within the frame. So, when you’re taking a selfie, what does the background look like?
- Is it attractive?
- Does it tell a story of sorts?
- Does it match what you want to say about yourself in that moment?
If not, think about taking the selfie in a better spot.
Apart from the background, you also need to think about how the object of the photo is centred in the frame. Are you in the centre, off-centre, to the left, or right? Does the angle look good?
You don’t want to get bogged down in these matters, but do think about them to set up your best images. You can be sure Kylie does!
3. Consider Colours & Light
A big chunk of what makes a picture appealing is the use of colour and light in it. The colour is introduced both through what you’re taking a picture of, be it a selfie, your food, a landscape, group shot or even your new mani. You can add filters onto your shots to ensure that the right tone is enhanced. This helps to create unity in your albums, you may want to highlight one colour in one album so that it looks consistent.
You can also play with light for great, fun effects. Kylie Jenner likes a good mirror shot, or to play with a lens flare. These can be done by creating the image that way, if you’re handy with a camera, or added in afterward via an editing app.
Last year Kylie Jenner held a photo tutorial on her site where she showed Khloe Kardashian how to take great shots. One of her tips was to use what she calls ‘golden hour’ or sunset lighting to take the best photos. While that might work in LA, I’m not sure how helpful it’d be here in Ireland!
4. Choose Your Clothes & Makeup Carefully
Unless you’re very lucky, we’re guessing you don’t have access to the same volume as clothes as Kylie Jenner does. But you can use what you have to the best of your ability. Even when Kylie Jenner looks as though she’s woken up looking like she does, it’s not true. Is it?? All her shots are staged – and if you want to have an Instagram like hers then you need to style your wardrobe for your pics with a similar attention to detail.
Put your best face forward too by applying a flawless face and a dash of highlighter. It makes your skin glow and helps you feel good. Kylie is a fan and has just released her own highlighter too.
5. Touch Up
This is where the magic happens. Even the best photographers make extensive use of editing software these days to ensure their photos really stand out. Kylie Jenner herself has said of her photos, “it’s really just how I edit them, that’s the real trick”. She also advised fans not to “go too crazy” with editing before restating that it is “important”. Again, you don’t have to know the ins and outs of photoshop to do this well, there are tons of free apps that perform superb editing easily. Kylie Jenner has revealed that she has used VSCO Cam, KitCam and Perfect365 at various times to help edit her pics. She also uses video editing apps such as Boomerang and InstaVideo Pro to tweak her videos.
6. Practice Makes Perfect
This is a really important principle. The photos that you see on Kylie Jenner’s Instagram are not the first one’s taken. She has said that she can take 500 shots in order to find one she likes. Most of us mere mortals don’t have time to go around taking photos all day long, so aim to take a couple of photos so that you have a choice of which one to put up. Remember that this is part of Kylie Jenner’s work, you don’t have to invest quite as much time as she does in it.
Not only does taking more photos help, but you’ll get better at it with time. Figure out which is your best side and use this to your advantage when setting up photos. Do you look better as Kylie suggests with your hair tucked behind your ears and pouting your lips slightly? Note the use of the word slightly. Duck face is not a good look, don’t do that! These techniques may work for you, or they may not. Not everyone looks better with their hair behind their ears, so discover what works best for you.
7. Mix It Up
While you want to maintain consistency in your photos in terms of quality, it can also be fun to mix things up a little. After all, variety is the spice of life. You don’t want all of your photos to be selfies, so ensure that you get lots of group shots with friends, action shots of you living your fab life and if you can enlist the help of a good friend, paparazzi type snaps of you on the go. Kylie Jenner has her sister Victoria to do this for her, she’s her ‘Instagram manager’. Maybe you and your bestie could be each other’s Instagram manager?!
Having a perfect Instagram with amazing photos is fun. It can be fun to style up the shots and snap away. But, try to remember to have fun with it. We can’t all be Kylie Jenner, and her investment in photo taking is serious. When things get too serious they stop being fun.
