iPhone 12: Everything You Need to Know Before Buying

The COVID 19 pandemic may have delayed the launch of Apple’s 2020 iPhones, but it has not stopped it. Last October, the company unveiled its new fleet of devices: iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

These four models vary in terms of size and features. They are also sold at different price points. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini have an affordable price tag, while the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the expensive models.

Tech experts see these variations as Apple’s way of widening its reach, catering to customers with different budgets and needs.

iPhone 12 Family: What Are the Key Features?

A14 Bionic Processer

The new line-up is powered by the same processor found in the iPad Air 4 – the A14 Bionic processor. It is the brand’s most advanced mail chip with 11.8 billion transistors. This is 3.3 billion more than the iPhone 11’s A13 Bionic processor.

Given the number of transistors they have, the iPhone 12 models are significantly faster and more power-efficient than their predecessors.

In this new generation of iPhone, performance does not have to be sacrificed for battery life. Users get top-notch performance without their battery getting drained quickly – thanks to the highly advanced A14 Bionic processor.

5G Connectivity

All iPhone 12 models support 5G connectivity which makes them more future-proof as 5G is expected to be the networking standard soon. With major telecom firms launching their 5G networks this year, there is no stopping 5G from becoming ubiquitous.

With these 5G-capable smartphones from Apple, users can enjoy faster uploads and downloads with some carriers in Ireland promising peak speeds of up to 1Gb per second.

What is even noteworthy is that the devices automatically switch to Gigabit LTE when 5G is not available. This capability greatly helps in preserving battery life.

OLED Display

The four devices have OLED screens with Super Retina XDR display. Said to have the most advanced iPhone screens, this line-up boasts of up to 1,200 nits of maximum brightness and 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

All these impressive features enable the iPhone 12 models to have superior image quality and more accurate colours.

Ceramic Shield Screen

Another state-of-the-art feature of the iPhone 12 devices is the so-called “Ceramic Shield” display cover. Made using nano-ceramic crystals infused into glass, the shield provides four times better drop protection.

Based on several drop tests, the iPhone 12’s ceramic shield was noted to be more durable than the iPhone 11’s glass covering.

But before you test it yourself, know that these latest handsets are still vulnerable to breaking as well as scratching. So, just like other iPhone models before them, these new devices still need to be handled with care.

MagSafe Wireless Charging

Wireless charging is not an entirely new capability for Apple handsets as this was introduced in iPhone 8. What’s different now though is the addition of the MagSafe charger, a magnetic wireless charging system.

First seen on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops, this charging technology works by snapping the MagSafe wireless charger onto the back of the handset.

While it is not as fast as a Lightning connection, the charger delivers up to 15 watts of power which is significantly more than the 7.5W in Qi-based chargers.

What’s more? The MagSafe is not just for charging! Other magnetic accessories like cases and snap on wallets can be attached to the device.

iPhone 12 Models: What Are Their Differences?

Now that we’ve talked about the key features found in the iPhone 12 line-up, let us talk about what sets them apart from each other.

iPhone 12 Mini

This phone is best for those who are looking for a compact yet powerful device. In fact, experts are calling it as the “best small phone” by far.

It has a 5.4-inch edge-to-edge display that features a notch at the top. The screen resolution is 2,349 x 1,080 pixels at 476 ppi. It is equipped with a dual-camera system in the rear that features a 12 MP primary lens and 12 MP ultrawide.

iPhone 12

This model is identical to the iPhone 12 Mini in structure and design. The main difference is the screen size as the iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch display and a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels at 460 ppi. The iPhone 12 is also slightly more expensive than the iPhone 12 Mini.

iPhone 12 Pro

The screen size and resolution of the iPhone 12 Pro is the same as the iPhone 12 but with just a few advanced features. What gives the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max an edge over the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 is their camera system.

The iPhone 12 Pro has a triple camera set-up in the rear with a LiDar Scanner which improves autofocus in low-light conditions. The third camera on the device is a telephoto lens with optical zoom, perfect for capturing detailed photos from a distance.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

This model has the biggest screen of them all. It measures 6.7 inches with a resolution of 2,778 x 1,284 at 458 ppi.

Its camera is a step above the iPhone 12 Pro as it is equipped with 65 mm telephoto lens that is capable of 5x optical zoom. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also the most expensive in this series.

In summary, the difference mainly lies in the camera with the higher-end models having far superior features.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are perfect for professional photographers and videographers. But if all you want is an iPhone with a good camera that you can use to immortalise important moments, then the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini will do.

The question now is – should you get an iPhone 12? With their advanced technology, these devices are good options if you want a phone that is ready for the future. But you should take note that, since these are very new, they are expensive.

So, if you are simply looking for an iPhone device with excellent features and performance but easy on the pocket, you might want to consider older generations like the iPhone 11 or iPhone 8.
